Remove before you replace
The first question is whether the piece, layer or insert is needed. Reducing size, board weight or an unnecessary wrap can have more effect than substituting a fashionable material.
Right-size the production run
Forecast carefully and use short-run or versioned production where content changes quickly. Excess printed stock carries material, storage and disposal costs even when the unit price looked attractive.
Ask specific paper questions
Request information on fibre source, recycled content, certification, coatings and suitability for the chosen finish. A recycled sheet is not automatically the best choice if it causes breakage or requires extra layers.
Design for separation
Magnets, foam, plastic windows, heavy lamination and permanently bonded mixed materials can complicate recovery. Where they are necessary, make components easy to separate and instructions clear.
Write claims that can be defended
Use precise statements about the actual material and production choice. Avoid broad environmental language that the project specification cannot support.
