Rigid box
Wrapped greyboard boxes that hold their shape and open with measured resistance. Well suited to launch kits, executive gifting and products that need a substantial presentation format.
A strong fit when
- The opening experience is an important part of the presentation
- The product inside is heavy, fragile or oddly shaped
- You need a magnetic or ribbon closure
- The box will be kept and reused after the product leaves it
Consider another format when
- The unit will travel through a courier network without a protective outer
- A lighter folding carton already provides enough protection and presence
- A one-off run cannot justify the tooling and assembly within the available budget
How it is built
The construction decisions that shape the result.
- 01Greyboard
- The rigid core, usually 1.5mm to 3mm. Greater thickness can hold a crisper corner and requires more work to wrap.
- 02Wrap
- The printed paper or cloth taken around the board. The turns and joins at the corners reveal how carefully the box has been wrapped.
- 03Turn-in
- How far the wrap folds over the top edge into the box. Adequate turn-ins protect the edge and create a cleaner interior finish.
- 04Platform or insert
- Foam, moulded pulp or folded board. It determines how the product is presented and supported during transit.

01Why does a rigid box usually cost more than a folding carton?+
A folding carton is made from one printed sheet that is cut, creased and glued. A rigid box uses a separate board structure and printed wrap that are brought together, often with hand work at the corners. The additional materials and assembly affect the cost.
02Can rigid boxes ship flat?+
Yes. Collapsible rigid constructions can ship flat and fold into shape with magnets or ribbon at the destination. They generally cost more per unit than set-up boxes, but can reduce storage and freight volume. The better option depends on quantity, packing labour and the delivery plan.
